Building Physics / Performance Engineer

This is an excellent opportunity for a passionate and motivated Building Physics / Performance Engineer to join at an early stage of a growing Leeds team, supporting multiple offices, to work on some of the most exciting and ambitious sustainable design projects in the UK across a broad type of sectors including commercial; education; residential; industrial; logistic; automotive and healthcare.

 

As a Building Physics / Performance Engineer at Ridge, you will work under the guidance and supervision of more experienced staff to develop your existing knowledge and skills in energy modelling and assist with the development of energy and sustainability strategies for new build and existing buildings. Over time you will be supported and encouraged to work towards Chartership with guidance from other chartered engineers.

Role and Responsibilities

The role of Building Physics / Performance Engineer will primarily be to provide assistance in the delivery of some of our key work streams:

  • Building regulations compliance modelling (Part L/EPC)
  • Thermal comfort analysis (TM52, TM59 & BB101)
  • Passive design and low-zero carbon technology studies
  • Supporting Net-zero operational energy studies for new and retrofit projects
  • Input into supporting planning documents e.g. Energy & Carbon strategies
  • Advising clients and architects on energy use and conservation in a range of buildings and sites, aiming to minimise the environmental impact and reduce the carbon footprint
  • Developing an understanding of Operational Energy Consumption in Buildings (TM54)

Experience and Skills Required

  • Batchelors or Masters degree in Engineering and having gained relevant practical experience in a similar role, you have demonstrable knowledge and experience of building physics, particularly in relation to heat transfer, energy, comfort criteria, CIBSE Guidance and other industry standards.
  • Good knowledge of dynamic simulation software (VE IES) and the UK Building Regulations, including a good understanding of the National Calculation Methodology.
  • Some understanding of mechanical design would be beneficial.
  • An interest and some working knowledge in Operational Energy predictions and Building Services system in use would be advantageous
  • Given the collaborative and client focussed nature of this role, effective communication skills and some experience of using your initiative to overcome challenges are essential.
